Quick answer: Rich Pins are Pins that show extra information taken from the website they link to. Pinterest supports three types: Article, Product and Recipe. You set them up on your website, not in the Pin: add the metadata Pinterest reads to the page, then create a Pin that links to that page.
This guide uses Pinterest's Business Help Center and Pinterest Developers documentation. Where the two pages word something differently, we say so.
What Are Pinterest Rich Pins?
Pinterest's Create rich Pins page says Rich Pins "automatically sync information from your site". The extra information sits above and below the image when someone opens the Pin.
That information comes from metadata on the linked page. It is separate from the Pin description you write. Pinterest's About Rich Pins page says the information in a Rich Pin "is independent of the Pin description".
A regular Pin can have a title, description and destination link. A Rich Pin adds supported details from the linked website, such as an article's headline or a product's price.
What Types of Rich Pins Does Pinterest Support?
Pinterest supports three types of Rich Pins.
| Type | What Pinterest shows | What the linked page needs |
|---|---|---|
| Article | Headline or title, description and author | Article metadata on the article or blog post page |
| Product | Pricing, availability and product information | Product metadata, a product people can buy on that page, and Pinterest's merchant guidelines met |
| Recipe | Title, serving size, cook time, ratings, diet preference and ingredients | Recipe metadata on the recipe page |
If one page carries metadata for more than one type, it does not show all three. Pinterest uses one type, in this order of priority: Product, then Recipe, then Article.
How Do You Set Up Rich Pins on Pinterest?
Setup happens on your website. Pinterest reads the metadata from the page a Pin links to.
Add Open Graph or Schema.org metadata
Pinterest Developers says the most common formats are Open Graph and Schema.org. Its Product Pins page says Shopify product pages already have the correct metadata. On other sites, check what your pages already output before adding a second set of tags.
Use the metadata required for your content type
Each type has its own required fields. For an Article Rich Pin, the Open Graph properties Pinterest lists as required are:
| Property | What it holds |
|---|---|
| og:type | The value article or blog |
| og:title | The article title |
| og:description | The article description or summary |
Optional properties include og:site_name, og:url, og:image and article:author. See Pinterest's Article Pins page for the full list.
For a Product Rich Pin, Pinterest's Product Pins page lists og:type (set to product), og:title, product:price:amount and product:price:currency as required. It also says the Pin must link to a page where a customer can actually buy the product. Use Pinterest's own pages for the exact Product and Recipe fields rather than a generic schema template.
Create a Pin that links to the marked-up page
Pinterest's Help page says: "All content from pages that have the correct meta tags will appear as rich Pins when you create a new Pin." It adds that existing Pins that link back to those pages "will now appear as Rich Pins".
Pinterest's two pages word the first step differently. The Developers page still has a section headed "Applying for Rich Pins". The Help page describes adding the tags and does not mention an application. If Pinterest asks you to complete a step for your site, follow its current instructions.
Check the Pin after Pinterest processes the metadata
Pinterest says it may take up to 24 hours for content from your site to sync to a Rich Pin. After that, open a Pin that links to the page and look for the extra details.
How Can You Tell If a Pinterest Pin Is a Rich Pin?
Open the Pin. Pinterest says you can identify Rich Pins "by the extra information above and below the image when you click into the Pin".
For an Article Pin, look for the headline and author. For a Product Pin, look for the price and availability. For a Recipe Pin, look for details such as cook time and ingredients.
Why Are My Pinterest Rich Pin Details Missing?
These are checks to work through. Each one is a possible cause, not a confirmed diagnosis.
- The tags are missing or incomplete. Compare your page's metadata with the required fields for its type on Pinterest Developers.
- The page is the wrong kind of page. Product Pins need a page where people can buy the product directly.
- Another type took priority. A page with both product and article metadata uses Product first.
- Pinterest has not synced yet. Pinterest says syncing can take up to 24 hours.
- The product does not qualify right now. Pinterest says Product Rich Pin information is shown only when the product is in stock, the price is accurate, Pinterest has updated the data recently and the merchant meets its guidelines.
- Someone edited the Pin by hand. For Article and Recipe Pins, Pinterest says a manual edit on Pinterest "will overwrite the rich metadata".
- The page has the opt-out tag. See the opt-out section below.
Do Rich Pins Update Automatically?
Yes, periodically. Pinterest says that if something changes on the original site, "the rich Pin periodically updates to reflect that change." Article and Recipe Rich Pins update to reflect edits you make to your site.
Updates are not instant. Pinterest says syncing can take up to 24 hours.
There is one exception to keep in mind. If you edit an Article or Recipe Rich Pin by hand on Pinterest, your manual edit overwrites the rich metadata.
How Do You Turn Off Rich Pins for a Page?
Pinterest gives a page-level opt-out tag:
<meta name="pinterest-rich-pin" content="false" />
Pinterest Developers says to put it in the head section of the page. It only affects that page. Other pages on your site keep their Rich Pins unless you add the tag to them too. To turn Rich Pins back on for the page, remove the tag.
This tag only applies to Rich Pins. Pinterest notes it is not the same as the no-pin image attribute, which stops people saving a specific image from your site.
Can PinEasy Help You Create or Analyse Pins?
PinEasy does not add Rich Pin metadata. That is set up on the website your Pin links to.
PinEasy helps with the Pin itself and with reading results. You can create and edit Pin images in PinEasy Studio, and review your Pinterest analytics in one place. For how a Pin's title, description and board help Pinterest search understand it, see our Pinterest SEO guide.
Frequently Asked Questions About Pinterest Rich Pins
What is the difference between a Rich Pin and a regular Pin?
A Rich Pin shows extra information taken from the linked website, such as a headline, price or ingredients. A regular Pin shows only what was added on Pinterest. Pinterest says Rich Pin information is independent of the Pin description.
How do I enable Rich Pins on Pinterest?
Add the Rich Pin metadata Pinterest documents to the page your Pin links to, then create a Pin that links to that page. Pinterest's Developers page still mentions applying for Rich Pins, while its Help page does not, so follow Pinterest's current instructions if it asks you to complete a step.
Do I need a business account to use Rich Pins?
Pinterest's Rich Pins setup pages do not list a business account as a requirement. They describe setting up Rich Pins through metadata on the linked website. These pages do not explicitly confirm which account types are eligible.
Can Pinterest Rich Pins update automatically?
Yes. Pinterest says Rich Pins periodically update when something changes on the original site. A manual edit to an Article or Recipe Rich Pin on Pinterest overwrites the rich metadata.
How long does it take Pinterest Rich Pin data to update?
Pinterest says it may take up to 24 hours for content from your site to sync to your Rich Pin. It does not promise a fixed schedule.
Why is my Rich Pin not showing the correct information?
Check the page's metadata against Pinterest's required fields, whether the Pin was edited by hand on Pinterest, and whether 24 hours have passed. For Product Pins, also check stock, pricing and Pinterest's merchant guidelines.
Do Rich Pins work with Etsy?
Yes. Pinterest says you do not need to add any markup if your site is hosted by Etsy, Teachers Pay Teachers or eBay, and that new Pins from these sites will have product information within 24 hours. Our guide to using Pinterest for Etsy covers the rest of the setup.
Do Pinterest Rich Pins improve reach or impressions?
Pinterest does not say they do. Its Developers page says Rich Pins give Pinners "a richer experience" and describes them as increasing engagement, but it publishes no figures and does not say they increase impressions or distribution.
